Honeybees Spotlight: Ginger By: Hornets.com | November 4, 2011
Hometown: Chalmette. Year as a Honeybee: Third.
Previous dance experience:
I have been dancing as long as I can remember. The only reason I actually started dancing was because of my brother. As soon as I was old enough to walk my mom would bring my brother and I together. After a couple years he eventually quit, however, I had found a new passion and continued dancing for the next 10 years at Sharron Thibodaux Dance Studio. While still continuing to dance, I found a new love with cheerleading. After discovering my love for cheerleading it was all downhill. My senior year I was captain of Chalmette High School’s varsity cheerleading team, and then went on to cheer for the University of New Orleans. I was also a proud staff member of the Universal Cheerleading Association. At the end of my second year on UCA staff I became a cheerleader for the hottest dance team in the NBA, the Honeybees. Honeybees has the PERFECT balance for me, it combines a great level of strong dance while still maintaining a cheerleading role, as we cheer towards a WIN! HOOP DAT!
What I love about being a Honeybee:
The one thing I love about being part of the Honeybees is the passion of all my teammates and we share that for this team and community. From the long workouts and practices, to being a role model in and out of uniform around this beautiful city. The New Orleans Hornets are such an amazing organization and I am so thankful I am able to work with such a talented staff. Also, performing in the Arena in front of the best fans in the NBA is such an amazing rush and always a fulfilling experience. It makes all the hard work worth it. Being a Honeybee is such a great honor, and provides many opportunities to expand my strong love for dance and cheer.
What I love about dancing:
What I love about dance is that there is no right or wrong way to dance. It expresses one’s creative individuality. Similar to people, no one exactly dances alike everyone has a different style. Dancing is definitely considered my therapy. It immediately puts me in a carefree state of mind and, nothing else really matters. The best thing about dancing is that it NEVER goes out of style.
What I love about New Orleans:
New Orleans truly is one of a kind. In New Orleans you can never get too much of a good thing, from the heritage, Jazz Fest, the street cars, the crawfish, the amazing people, the VooDoo fest, Mardi Gras, the incredible food and the jazz music playing throughout Bourbon Street (any time of day). And how could I forget that New Orleans is also home to our New Orleans Hornets, Saints and Voodoo sports teams. I am so proud to say that I am from this unique place. New Orleans is my home and after relocating during Hurricane Katrina I can honestly say there is NO place like home. "We in da NOLA baby."
What I love to do when I’m not performing with the Honeybees:
I enjoy spending the day in New Orleans, walking around and shopping at the many unique gift shops. I like to call it "playing a tourist in my hometown." New Orleans has so many attractions and plenty to offer, so any opportunity that I can, I grab a friend and head downtown. When I’m not performing with the Honeybees, I LOVE going to the Hornet games, and supporting my Bees. The energy in the arena and the entertainment throughout the whole game is always a time to remember! I love taking random getaways and spending time with my friends and family. I’m also a full-time student and have a part-time job. So when I’m not at workouts, or dancing, or studying, or working or shopping I’m usually catching up on sleep. Zzzzz...
