Magic Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

January 17, 2010

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 18, 2010:

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is well-known for being an active voice and leader of the civil rights era. Martin Luther King Day is a significant holiday for many people—not just African Americans—because it commemorates the legacy of Dr. King, who led civil rights revolution predicated upon the principle of non-violent resistance and equality for all.

This holiday was established on November 2, 1983. However, it was observed for the first time by the Congressional Black Caucus on January 20, 1986. Martin Luther King Day was not officially recognized by all 50 states until 2000.

Congratulations to the 2010 MLK Humanitarian Award winners:

On January 9th, 2010 the Orlando Magic recognized the 2010 MLK Humanitarian Award recipients during a special on-court presentation. Orange County middle and high school students were selected by faculty because they embody the ideals of Dr. King: equality, justice, peace, leadership, integrity, and volunteerism.

“Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
